We recently had a once in a life time opportunity to travel around one of the worlds most majestic and magnificent places; Morocco! From the rolling sand dunes in the desert, to the unexpected wonders in the winding bazar, Morocco has so many magical sights to be seen. As I have mentioned before, we love to draw design inspiration from traveling, so it was no surprise that we left Morocco feeling invigorated and extremely motivated to share our new design insights and inspirations with you all. After returning from the trip and looking through the hundreds of photographs that we took, we identified three particular design themes (discussed below), which we think make Morocco so unique and wonderful. We hope that you enjoy feasting your eyes on our ‘Treasures From Morocco’….

Design Theme: COLOR
Everywhere you go in Morocco, there is an array of vivid colors. From the bold splashes of paint on walls and doors, to pastel hues on plant pots and window frames, the Moroccans do not shy away from vibrant color!
We explored the beautiful and world renownd Majorelle Gardens (below), which have been owned by Yves Saint Laurent since 1980. The luxuriant and vivid colored painted gardens are visited by thousands every year – making it one of the most popular tourist attractions in Marrakech.
Design Theme: PATTERN & MOSAICS
From the vast patterns on big buildings, such as the Koutoubia Mosque (pictured below), to the intricate detailing on local furniture and crafts, mosaic patterning can be seen just about everywhere in Morocco.
We loved these contrasting black and white mosaic patterned chests.
Design Theme: OUTDOOR LIVING
During our time in Morocco we had the pleasure of staying at a couple of different locations where we noticed one lifestyle consistency in both the city and the desert. From outdoor rugs, to lanterns, and floor cushions to dining tables, it is clear that the Moroccan’s love to live in the great outdoors!
Design Theme: LOCAL ARTS & CRAFTS
We loved the Moroccan appreciation for local arts and crafts which can all be very easily sourced from local souks. Many houses and hotels, including the Kasbah du Toubkal where we stayed, exclusively use locally sourced products; From the china plates that you eat off, to the stools that you sit on, to the beautiful Moroccan rugs beneath your feet, everything is made in the surrounding villages of Marrakech.
The Moroccan Souk’s are overflowing with whimsical treasures!
Shopping for rugs was one of our most memorable experiences, especially as it meant we got to know this very special local rug dealer!
There were rugs in every color and pattern imaginable… how do to choose?
After much deliberation and (a little haggling) we sealed the deal on the rugs!
And last but not least, a final happy snap from the trip; Camel Safari rides in the desert.
